Workers' Comp: Medical Mileage
What is medical mileage & how does it work?
As of July 1, 2011, the amount of money that workers' comp claim administrators pay injured workers for travel related to medical treatment/evaluation of their injuries increased from 51¢ per mile to 55.5¢ per mile. This payment is known as medical mileage, and is mandated by the California Labor Code §4600 (e)(2), in conjunction with Government Code §19820 and Department of Personnel Administration regulations.
Many states provide medical mileage payments for workers who have suffered work-related injuries or illnesses, and the rate is usually tied to the IRS published mileage rate for the calendar year. Because of the recent spike in gas prices, the IRS made a special adjustment for the last six months of 2011. If you have suffered workplace injuries and are looking to file for
workers' compensation, an Oakland workers' comp attorney at the firm can help you seek medical reimbursement for your medical mileage as well.
Workers' Compensation Attorney in Oakland, CA
Medical mileage reimburses injured workers for the mileage they drive to and from doctors' appointments, the pharmacy, physical therapy appointments, and other medical appointments that are necessary for their workers' comp claim. If you are looking to be reimbursed, you must pick up a medical mileage form from your employer and use it to document your mileage along the way. Be sure to keep a copy of the form for yourself when you mail it in to your adjustor, as they have been known to lose or conveniently misplace forms in the past.
There is no specific date for when your medical mileage form is due, you can just mail it in whenever and start another sheet where your last one left off. Medical mileage is a huge help to workers and their families during the time of financial need that typically follows a severe injury. The Law Offices of Jonathan M. Brand is passionate about helping workers receive the compensation and benefits they deserve under the law, so call the firm today for the caring help you deserve.
